Red Bull's Max Verstappen Wins Belgian Grand Prix
Dutch Driver Overcomes Grid Penalty for Power Unit Change
Verstappen started the race from sixth on the grid but quickly made his way to the front, passing several cars on the opening lap. He then led for the majority of the race, only briefly losing the lead to Ferrari's Carlos Sainz Jr. during the pit stops. Verstappen eventually crossed the line first, ahead of Sainz and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton.
Verstappen's victory was his fourth of the season and extended his lead in the drivers' championship standings. He now has a 93-point lead over Sainz, with Hamilton a further 16 points behind. Red Bull also extended its lead in the constructors' championship standings, with 443 points to Ferrari's 352 and Mercedes' 262.
The race was also notable for the retirement of Alfa Romeo's Valtteri Bottas on the first lap. Bottas was hit by McLaren's Lando Norris and forced to retire with a damaged car. Norris was given a five-second time penalty for the incident.
The Belgian Grand Prix was the 13th race of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship. The next race is the Dutch Grand Prix, which will be held on September 4 at the Circuit Zandvoort.
