New Treatment Option For Life Threatening Allergies

FDA Approves Neffy Epinephrine Nasal Spray for Severe Allergic Reactions

New Treatment Option for Life-Threatening Allergies

August 9, 2024, at 14:55 PM

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first nasal spray epinephrine drug for severe allergic reactions known as anaphylaxis. The spray, called Neffy, is a single-dose nasal spray used in one nostril and was approved for use in adults and children who weigh at least 66 pounds.

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that can cause difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat, and a drop in blood pressure. Epinephrine is the first-line treatment for anaphylaxis, and it is typically administered via an injection. However, Neffy is the first nasal spray formulation of epinephrine that has been approved by the FDA.

The FDA's approval of Neffy is based on two clinical trials that showed the drug to be effective in treating anaphylaxis. In one trial, Neffy was found to be as effective as injected epinephrine in relieving symptoms of anaphylaxis. In the other trial, Neffy was found to be safe and well-tolerated.
