Early Career and Education
Born in Oakland, California, Kamala Harris had a passion for justice and public service instilled in her at an early age. After graduating from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of Law, Harris began her legal career as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County from 1990 to 1998.
In 1998, she was elected district attorney of San Francisco, becoming the first African American woman to hold that position in California. During her tenure, Harris implemented innovative programs to address recidivism and promote restorative justice.
Attorney General of California
In 2011, Harris made history again when she was elected California's first female and first African American attorney general. In this role, Harris oversaw the state's legal matters and played a significant role in shaping California's criminal justice, environmental protection, and consumer protection policies.
She implemented progressive reforms, including the creation of the California Department of Justice's Racial and Identity Profiling Advisory Board and the establishment of an independent oversight body for law enforcement agencies.
United States Senator
In 2016, Harris was elected to the United States Senate, making her the second African American woman to serve in that chamber. As a senator, Harris has been an outspoken advocate for issues such as healthcare, criminal justice reform, and climate change.

In 2020, Harris reached the pinnacle of her career when she was elected Vice President of the United States, becoming the first woman and the first person of color to hold that position.
