Grand Jury Indictment Missouri

Missouri Grand Jury Indicts Governor Eric Greitens on Felony Invasion of Privacy Charge

Breaking News

The Missouri grand jury has indicted Missouri Governor Eric Greitens on a felony invasion of privacy charge, according to the Western District of Missouri Attorney's Office. The indictment stems from allegations that Greitens took a nonconsensual photo of a woman without her knowledge while they were engaged in a sexual encounter.

Details of the Indictment

The indictment, which was released on Thursday, alleges that Greitens "knowingly photographed or recorded in a state of nudity another person, [the victim], without her consent and knowing that such person would be likely to suffer emotional distress from the conduct." The indictment further alleges that Greitens "subsequently transmitted the image to a computer" and "used the image without her consent to leverage his political and financial interest."

Governor's Response

Greitens has denied the charges and has vowed to fight them. He has called the indictment a "political witch hunt" and has accused the special prosecutor of overreach. The governor has also said that he will not resign from office.

Legal Proceedings

The indictment is the latest development in a series of legal proceedings against Greitens. The governor is also facing a separate felony charge of tampering with evidence related to the invasion of privacy case. A trial on that charge is scheduled to begin in May.

Missouri Law and Grand Juries

According to Missouri law, grand juries have the power to conduct legal proceedings and decide if there is probable cause to believe that a crime has been committed. In the case of Greitens, the grand jury determined that there was sufficient evidence to indict him on the invasion of privacy charge.
